Description of Artwork: "Stuck in Neutral" is a tale of a young teen with cerebral palsy. Unable to move his body, fourteen year old Shawn struggles to communicate with his family.
The Incident: Parents found the novel to have "dark themes" such as mentions of sex and suicide inappropriate for the Houston school system's 9th grade reading list. They lobbied to have the book removed.
Results of Incident: NCAC sent a letter demanding that "Stuck in Neutral" remain on school reading list. Despite complaints from parents, the book was not banned.
